We have seen the old buildings under demolition. The reinforcement rods that we see there are a bit different from those we use today. In earlier days, Mild Steel (MS) rods were used to reinforce RCC components of a building. The surface of the MS rod is smooth. Cement would not adhere very well to the surface of the rods. Hence all rods were hooked at the ends to hold the concrete from deflecting. More time was required for fabrication of the bars. These days, the most commonly used reinforcement bars are technically called as CTD (Cold twisted and deformed) bars or High Yield Strength Deformed (HySD) bars. These bars have a bit more of carbon content than MS bars. More the carbon content, brittle the bars are and lesser is the ductility. These rods have ribs on the surface which obliquely wind around the rod. The core of the rod is of uniform area and is available in different diameters like 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 mm etc. Different grades of steel reinforcement are available depending on the yield strength of the bars. Fe-415 (40 grade), Fe - 500 (50 grade) and Fe - 550 (55 grade) are common. Bars of higher strength are normally used in order to decongest (reducing the number of rods used) the concrete in thin columns and large span beams.
